CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Paul Newman 🐈 Elizabeth Taylor in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF with STEVE HAYES
Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor heat up the screen in this scorching adaptation of Tennessee William’s Pulitzer prize-winning play CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (’58). Directed by Richard Brooks and co-starring Jack Carson, Judith Anderson, and from the original Broadway cast, Madelyn Sherwood and Burl Ives, Oscar winner that year for” The Big Country.” It's the perfect “dysfunctional family” film to curl up and devour during the long, hot summer, with everything from greed, lust, loathing, nasty accusations, adultery, and more than a hint of homosexuality. Such fun!

    Back in 2002 the AFI made a documentary about romantic movies called "100 Years, 100 Passions" and had different celebrities introduce them in short segments. This movies fell somewhere in the fifties and Harvey Korman & Tim Conway introduced it. Korman: "This is a classic with a beautiful Montgomery Clift falling in love with beautiful Elizabeth Taylor and needing to get rid of his pregnant wife." Conway: "Would you leave your wife for Elizabeth Taylor?" Korman: "Are you kidding? I'd leave MY wife for Shelley Winters!" One of the few times I ever saw Korman crack Conway up.

    Probably my least favorite of your reviews. Why? Because it's completely unnecessary and people requesting it only wish to her their own opinions coming out of your mouth. Everyone likes this movie and its production is so famous that movies have been made about it so not much more to really add despite it being iconic in the gay community. However it is a RIOT watching you going full camp with it 👅

    Oh baby ... where do we begin? I have loved this movie since I first saw it and I'm so glad you got around to giving us your opinion. Elizabeth's method of coping with her moarning wasn't so odd when you consider that she was a consumate actress who would have stepped over Todd's corpse without missing a syllable in her line. The biggest joy of this film was hating on Sister Woman. Madeline Sherwood was an astounding person and I'll always have great respect for her. (She also looks exactly like a family friend), however, much as I like Jack Carson as Gooper and despite his excellent performance, I feel he was to old for that part. I have always held that the conservative faction at the time really liked folk singing Burl Ives but wouldn't dare show their association for ANY movie which approached the taboo subject of homosexuality so they flipped it for The Big Country (which he's just as good in).

    I am a film buff and will practically watch nearly anything from Alien (1980) to XXyy (2007) . I saw Peyton Place about 5 years ago but new nothing about it going into it and I must say... the acting is superb and the scandal is polarizing. This is a classic that everyone should see along with Pride and Prejudice (1940) and Gone with the Wind (1939).

    Dear Steve, I hope this response reaches you, because I remember this film when it appeared on television long ago, and spent my time thanking God I'd only had male bosses who, however appalling, hadn't been anything like Joan Crawford. She's terrifying in this! I like all the young actresses very much (poor Suzy Parker seems to have broken every bone in her body at one time or another) and always especially admired Diane Baker. Please excuse my going off topic (as so often) because I wanted to comment re the Elizabeth Taylor tapes which you saw and recently wrote told us nothing new. But apparently Elizabeth talks about having been so wretched at one time she attempted suicide, and I've kept my mouth shut about this since 1961, which is an all-time record for me. In my teens I was in an amateur film unit, because I wanted to learn about writing for and making films (I even learned how to edit and splice film in the way it used to be done back then). The father of a friend in the unit was an eminent doctor, and when Elizabeth nearly died of pneumonia and had to have a tracheotomy, he said every doctor in the world knew she must have tried to commit suicide, because that kind of pneumonia only occurred for that reason in someone of her age. Debbie Reynolds didn't deserve Eddie Fisher and clearly Elizabeth Taylor found out she didn't either. I'm so glad they both survived being married to him. Best wishes, Alida

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ 6 днів тому

      Wow, Alida, I never knew this. Fascinating. Well, she got the Oscar she hated and eventually back on track for wahile. I love her for what she did gfor the LGBTQ community during the AIDS crisis and I think her performances in " Cat", Suddenly, Last Summer" and especially " Vurginia Woolf" are beyond reproach. As for " The Best Of Everything" I sat next to author Rona Jaffe at a screening of it in a retro theatre in New York and when I asked her how she liked the film version of her novel she said; " They turned it into a Joan Craford picture." She also told me she had an affiar with the guy playing Martha Hyers's married love interest...both their parts and story line were whittled down to nothing. I would love to have seen the footage of the drunk scene in the bar that Crawford demanded be shot and that Negulesco complied in filming then instantly threw out when it hit the editing room. Hope you are well and that things have cooled down. Best Wishes; Steve

    John Wayne was in fact the "Otto" of the movie!

      I think he's wonderful in this, though he hated his performance.

    Dark Passage is by far my favorite Bogart movie due to the onscreen chemistry between him and Bacall, cinematography, cast etc. - even though it has its implausibilities like for example Madge Rapf not recognizing Perry right away and so on.

      It's mine too, because of the supporting cast being so strong.

    I highly recommend her autobiography. Ms. Swanson was a woman of many talents and interests - from health foods to supporting inventors during WW2, in business, TV, radio and so on. If that’s not impressive enough- she was Joan Crawford’s idol! When JC and Stanwyck worship you that’s ultimate divadom!

    Is there a reason why Broadway plays (especially Tennessee Williams plays) could get away with talking about gay stuff?

      Broadway, at the time, was more liberal, where as the movies were still somewhat stifled by the strick production code that had ruled them for years. Directors tried, sometimes succesfully, to get around the subject and some couldn't and had to simply give in. By the time this was made, it was lifting and would be, gradually , rpped off by the progressive '60's and ''70's.
